I'm in the no-brake camp, if you're taking a consensus. The VG6 Gamma and Omega brakes I tried on my 5.56 rifles really make my ears ring. And that's with earplugs and ear muffs. No thanks. I still have a Gamma on my 18" 5.56, but I also have their CAGE gadget on that for good measure.
On two of my three Grendels (the 16" and 20") I am using the SixFiveOutfitters low-pro flash hiders. And on third and probably final Grendel upper-build, a 22" Wilson SS fat-barrel, I ended up getting their own thread protector after looking around for a bit. Wish I'd discovered they made a near perfect TP for this dia barrel for this barrel of theirs when I got my barrel; I'd have been able to paint it at the same time and shoot it in an odd rattle-can green. Anyway, here's what that looks like. I say near perfect because I'd have preferred it not to have the flats. I can get it tight enough with just a wrap of raw hide and channel locks.
