I have two each Comp M-2's that I got fifteen years ago. I keep batteries in them all the time. I have taken them out and used them, put them up and six months later they turned on and held zero. They are very user friendly to zero too. You can actually feel and hear the clicks.
Of all the dot sights I have owned, those Aimpoints have been the most durable, most able to take really bad weather, most able to take a beating, and had the clearest dot. Since it is in a tube, it has flip up covers. These are really handy when a guy is freezing rain, snow, or simply a drizzle that goes on all day. I have flipped up the ocular cover and used it with the 'occluded eye' technique almost as precisely as both covers open. Another big plus is that you can turn them on and off, adjust zero, wearing gloves. Submersible to two atmospheres I believe. Very good insurance IMHO. For hunting or combat purposes I don't think there is anything better.
Looking at the Aimpoint catalogue, seems like the Patrol Rifle Optic comes the closest. $450.00 is pretty much on par with the really good dot sights. Surprising to me because a number of years ago I was looking at the Comp line of dot sights and all were over$1K.
