The goal is to get your pupil quickly and consistently centered in the middle of your scope tube. As others said, a "standard" AR scope mount used with a traditional cheek weld with a "standard" AR stock is likely to put your pupil below the center of your scope. For precision work, I like a more traditional shooting position on ARs, as compared to a more "heads up" shooting position. I like DNZ Freedom Reaper mounts. They're (I think) 1.38" centered above the rail, as opposed to the "standard" of 1.5" for ARs. You can use a Magpul PRS stock to get an adjustable rise. The PRS Lite stock can occasionally be found as well. You can also modify a number of Magpul stocks by attaching a cheek riser that Magpul makes for M1As, but you'll have to shorten the riser a bit for it to allow the charging handle to cycle on ARs in most telescoping stock positions. Depending on your scope's eye relief, you might not be able to cycle the charging handle without taking off so much of the riser that it no longer provides a good cheek weld. I now just use a PRS for my precision uppers. In fact, outside of precision work, I'm moving toward the camp that something a bit higher than the "standard" 1.5" might be better all around. Ultimately,though, it's about what's fits you, your rifle, and your shooting preferences. Also, as mentioned, Nightforce makes the lowest mount out there.
