My opinion may differ from many on here but for my old eyes (70+ and counting) I like to see what I'm shooting at... so use more mag than most of the guys on here, 'least that's what it seems to me. It's what my eyes need to do their job.
Your eyes are the only ones that can tell you whether it's enough magnification. But the one caveat is to start out with a good scope, that is clear etc. $300 isn't going to get you there. I've got several budget or "econ" scopes right now on the shelf but find they just don't do it for me any more. And this is not the opinion I started out with, but it's where I'm ending up.
If I can't find a vortex strike eagle or better I pretty much pass on the rest. So as of now most of mine are strike eagle (2 at 3-18x44) or vipers. When I went out to 1000 yds couple of years ago with my 6.5 Creed I had a 4-16x and it was just enough, but no room to spare so next time I'll have some more magnif in my pocket. But this is just what's working for me. From a shooting bench too btw.
I haven't done any 34mm scopes, they seem like too hefty and bulky to me, these 30mm ones are doing well.
edit to add: for out to 600 I figure 16x will do, I'll be putting that to the test in a couple months.
