Thanks mel. I'd read up on the concept and decided to try them, though I haven't had my rifles out to the desert yet this season. I know there's a common type for Harris bipods, big honkin' aluminum ones. But $40 seemed like a crazy price to pay for such things. So after a bit of looking I found this type, which seems to be available mainly in Europe for whatever reason. Made of stainless steel, not aluminum. And not as gigantic. This company's in Italy. I paid only about $25 for them, if that, after postage. Took about two weeks to get to San Diego.

Anyway, I'm just a little curious to see if they help. I mostly put my bipod feet on top of my shooting pad. But I'll try folding the pad under a little and digging these spikes into the gravel. I'm sure it'll load better with the feet dug in a little.
Also, for good measure I ordered a couple of shooting bags from Helikon the other day. Coming out of Europe too, by coincidence. I might not see them for a month or two. They come unfilled, so I'll have to head over to the local crafts store to find some media to put in them:
And speaking of fill options, I have an older home-made shooting pillow that I filled with some extra walnut-husk tumbling media. That stuff works pretty well too and isn't especially heavy. doesn't have too much of a problem holding shape, unlike sand in that bag, which is heavy and just wants to keep flowing down to form the bag into a blob shape.
