Another check is to pull the charging handle all the back and see where the face of bolt ends up in relationship to the back edge of the ejection port. The face of the bolt is supposed to stop between 1/8" to 1/4" in front of the back edge of the port. Have witnessed a couple of old jams in the past on guns that had the buffer disappearing behind the back edge of the port, the quarters fixed them.

Yup, a buffer can be drilled too short, causing a short stroke during recoil.. I have seen these in cheaper commercial buffer tubes..I have never seen a spec 1/8" to 1/4" for this, but if you have evidence of this or a drawing I would much appreciate seeing it...
