I assume you have a carbine buffer tube installed with the 20" barrel?? Close the gas block and then open until the mag catch reliably catches the bolt carrier on the last round. You can open it further for reliability in different operation temperatures and increased fouling.
Don't forget to maintain your adjustable gas block by putting a little oil on the adjustment screw and screwing in and out after any significant amount of shooting...
Ejection pattern is not always a fail safe indicator of pressure in the system. What you are trying to do is slow the BCG recoil velocity with the adj gas block. Heavier buffers are the other option, but I would try the adj. gas block first...
You should also check your recoil spring for stacking and test the BCG recoil length.
