Has anyone had direct experience with improved accuracy with the same barrel by changing from a dimpled set screw gas block to a clamp on gas block?
I havent used a dimpled gas block yet, but I picked up the SLR jig, as that seems to provide the most repeatable method to accurately locate a dimple available to the end user.
A real world study would be good. Talking to many smiths, shooters, etc, the problem also occurs with pinned blocks too. Some people have a habit of dimpling their barrels too deep and then cranking on the set screw, "which has negative implications on the bore itself" along with accuracy.
I only used the clamp type blocks for my Grendel builds and precision directed AR builds..
The SLR jig is a great jig to keep the gas ports concentric to each other. I still use a bore guide to verify before drilling, but it has always been spot on.. On a side note, you will know which rifle barrel makers have the toughest steel when dimpling. D.D. HFB has the hardest I have tried so far..
