Ran into the same problem here... too much shim stock I'll never use. I thought about buying it, cutting it into 12" pieces & selling it but opted for the Brownell's product 'cause I was already gonna get a bunch of gun cleaning supplies. Brass has been around a lot longer than refined steel. I too think your brass shim oughta work fine.
I refuse to be victimized by notions of virtuous behavior.
