Its not BS and I have seen the pics and he is in his 70's using a cut rifled barrel and the shooting took place in Boise. Or how about 8 police officers from Bonneville, Clark and other county mounties shooting a head sized rock at 935 yds every time out in the Arco desert at the police junk yard shoot in October. Saw that with my own eyes so bring it on as we are arranging a Grendel shoot in Idaho falls around May time.
So read on
In July of 2011, Quality Arms completed the assembly of an AR-15 UPPER Receiver chambered in the 6.5 Grendel using the Saturn machine cut rifling fluted barrel in the 1/8.5 twist. After 4 months of research and countless ballistic calculations, the 6.5 Grendel introduced by Alexander Arms seemed to offer the extended range that I desired in a black rifle platform. This cartridge using the LAPUA 123 Grain Scenar Hollow-Point BT Bullet is still supersonic at greater than 1200 yards (BC @0.547).
The rifle was set up with the Nightforce 20 MOA base and the Leupold 8.5 X to 25X TMR Scope. The equivalent zero with the 20 MOA base would be 735 yards for this configuration. The initial sight-in at 735 yards was achieved in five rounds, which was independently validated by a fellow marksman as a witness. This allowed dial-up settings within the scope adjustment for the ranges at 1000, 1200, and 1325 yards. The windage was set or refined by dialing down to the 200 and 100 yard marks and printing five round groups to finalize the horizontal or windage zero This effort then went back to the 700 yard mark to adjust the 735 yard zero down to 700 yards. The first three round group printed was at a 2-inch extreme spread and shooting tennis balls at this distance was confirmed to be possible.
This cartridge (6.5 Grendel) has exhibited excellent performance out to the 1000, 1200, and 1325 yards (¾-Mile). There is a current effort on-going to check this rifle/cartridge performance at the 1500 yard distance. At this distance, density altitude becomes a significant and limiting player in the equation and the bullet has dropped below the supersonic velocity value of 1133 feet/second at 75 degrees Fahrenheit. At an outside air temperature (OAT) of 80 degrees Fahrenheit in September of 2011, it was shown that a group size smaller than a gallon milk jug is possible at the 0.85 Mile distance; however, at an OAT of 42 degrees in late February 2012, the point of impact was 4.5 feet lower than at the 80 degree temperature causing the Point of Impact (POI) to drop below the target with the 40.5 MOA dial up, plus the 20 MOA base, and a hold on the lowest mark in the TMR scope. More needs to be done to compete the testing at this extreme distance for this cartridge and load. This effort is planned for the coming spring 2012.
The Quality Arms Upper Receiver chambered in the 6.5 Grendel with the 123 grain bullet has exceeded my initial expectations by a significant margin
