There is no way in hell that 6.8mm is any "better" performer than 6.5mm. Real world doesn't work that way with such negligible differences.
Terminal difference is gonna be negligible.
External difference is gonna favor 6.5mm, so why not?
No program manager is gonna feel fulfilled just saying, "It makes sense to use the 6.5 Creedmoor existing design." That won't look good to his bosses or his resumé. "You mean you just took an off-the-shelf cartridge and didn't spend millions on a fresh study to justify this program?"

Let's face it the reason it's a 6.8 is because someone at the top of the turd pile is a 6.8 leg humper.
They can claim we tested this are that but at the end of the day there is zero collected data on their end to support they tested existing and are specially designed 6.5mm bullets against this specially designed 6.8 bullet they are useing.
Fact of the matter is you put this weapon and case design in the hands if competition shooters and hunters and the first thing that will change is the dia of the bullet and you bet your butt it will go down in dia from 6.8.
