Never having played with the 5mm rimfire I cant comment.
The two 17RFs I have went through shall we say a few, bricks.
The 17WSM is a whole different animal than any other rimfire. Proper placement of the firing pin is essential for good accuracy and ignition on rimfires. A huge amount of information can be had with Bill Calfees book on rimfires.
The 17WSM demands a very heavy firing pin blow. Dont ask how I know.
I have a cartridge that was repeatedly tried until it went off. There were around 18 strikes before it went off.
I have a Savage Bmag. Yes it looks like a 3rd grade engineer designed it with a crayon on a big chief tablet. I have tinkered with mine enough that I have come to the conclusion until some one else starts making ammo other than WW, it will be what it is. It will and has shot little cluster groups. Then only to shoot patterns with the same box of ammo later. I will say it is a MOA gun for the avaerage day.
I know others that have spent a pile of money and glean no better results than I have. Most have come to the conclusion that it is not a lack of quality gun or barrel, but ammo.
If I were in the shoes of the OP, knowing what I know, the only TC product I would give a try is the Encore. Simply because of the mass/weight of the hammer for consistent ignition.
I advise to just go to the 17HH on a Contender and be happy.
A rechamber of an existing 17HMR may well end up a some what expensive lesson, going on by guess and by golly.
After having shot IHMSA since the mid 80s with Contenders of all calibers and types, I changed hammer springs on a fairly regular basis.
A question I alway have regarding a so called G1. How come there was never a G1 until a G2 arrived on the scene? All we ever had prior was a Contender, never anything regarding a number. There were the early hard to open frames and the easy to open frames always still refered too as a Contender. The G cant properly be said to refer to generation either, as there were numerous changes prior to the Encore and the G2.
