Was at the range yesterday and just by chance their was a rep from Hornady coaching another shooter on honing his skills and helping him set up his rifle for use in PRS. He came over to me and asked me how I liked my 6 ARC, he noticed the ammo boxes and the spent brass laying on the ground right next to him. He was not an engineer but had a lot of good knowledge to pass on. One of the topics we touched on was barrel life, I brought it up due to this thread.
His reply was he was not an engineer and did not know all the specifics but assured me that I was not going to shoot out my barrel in 3000 rounds. That was one of the requirements the DoD specified was the barrel had to last. The military guns have full auto capabilities and they needed something with life in it. He also stated that the DoD had a lot of specifics that this platform had to meet. He was not sure what was engineered into this platform, and that many different calibers and materials used were taken into consideration. Development took over two years.
So what it comes down to the DoD would never had excepted a platform that burnt a barrel out in 3000 rounds, it would have never lasted through training one soldier. I asked him what I could expect, he could not give me a definitive answer on that question.
On Monday I am going to call a number the gentleman passed on to me to speak to an engineer to get some educated answers.
