I think that it is important to note that the throat sees not only combustion gasses, it sees powder particles as well. The larger the case volume-to-bore diameter, the more abrasive particles at high temperature and pressure will be sand-blasting its way past the throat. On a related topic, I have seen comments from precision shooters that state that aligning the moving mix of gasses and burning powder with a long neck helps reduce throat erosion. I have mainly seen this from proponents of 6mmPPC and .338 Norma Magnum.
