In 2000 I was doing some mining with a small group from the Gold Prospectors of America just north of Nome, AK. We were told grizzly bears could be a problem so each of us carried pump or semi-auto 12 gauge shotguns loaded with slugs when traveling between mining sites. Never saw a bear but the signs were there. At the main camp, a fellow who had been out alone came in & related he had been chased on his ATV by a grizzly sow after he surprised her on the trail. He was suffering from severe pucker factor! Pepper spray was available but most preferred carrying firearms.
I refuse to be victimized by notions of virtuous behavior.
