The way I read it is that the new super alloy cartridge "brass" is a testbed. They'll start with 7.62x51 and compare it to a known quantity, and then test it in more calibers.
I was also curious Federal didn't tie it in to Next Generation Squad Weapon (NGSW). Maybe they're trying to get around SIG's two-part casing patent and the polymer patents by going direct to a super alloy?
I'm dubious about the super high pressures of this Next Generation Carbine Technologies (NGCT) and NGSW.
But, then again, I suppose there were plenty of naysayers in the late 1800s as the firearms world moved from black powder to smokeless. They probably thought the new pressures were crazy high, as well. (If they tested pressure back then.)
I will never agree with using a larger-than-5.56-6.5 Grendel-6mmARC cartridge for logistics purposes in the standard infantry rifle or carbine. Same cartridge overall length but better performance? Yes. Same performance but smaller cartridge? Yes. Bigger cartridge? No.
