Wow. Its amazing how one can go from "We'd like something to substitute for a 7.62 DMR" to "We're replacing the .308."

The Army recently adopted a new rifle, the MK22 ASR by Barrett. It's a multi-caliber rifle chambered in .308, 300 Norma Mag and 338 Norma Mag. They're planning on 7.62 being around for a while.

Well that's what hornady has said from day one.

Hornady has stated since the start that the unnamed DoD unit asked for a ar15/m4/m16 cartridge to replace their 7.62/308 chambered rifles.

Since 556 is the standard milspec issued round that to me suggest they wanted too do any with their DMR/sniper rifles chambered in 7.62 in favor of a rifle system/cartridge in the same weight class as the ar15/m4/m16, that could be used as a DMR/Sniper round and have 24 round mag capacity if needed to lay down a volume of fire if needed.
