The mob was not on a public street or sidewalk, it was a private gated community, trespassing had already occurred well before they approached the house. It didn't rise to the level where deadly force was needed but any reasonable person would be alarmed and could see how quickly it could have gone that way. For the most part I agree with the scenarios you listed.
