Ok, I played with the ballistics calculator Hornady has on their site some more than I had previously.
Given the values from the PF short barrel test, and what appears to be the accepted wisdom that 123gr out of a 12.5" is fine for 600 yards, a 7.5" barrel would be good for about 450 yards. 8.5" gets it up to 500.
Guess I'd better start saving up
