by rail i assume you meant optics rail, correct? ya, my fingers/thumb is also too big to fit underneath my optics rail too. but the neat thing about that oberndorf latch is that it is so easy to flip the rifle magazine up, pop the latch, put the rounds in the magazine and snap it closed and you're good to go. but to each their own. if very light weight is what you're after look and see if talley makes a, hmmm, what do you call them, where the base and ring is a single assembly. one for the front and one for the back. that might give you a bit more room between the bottom of the scope and the magazine opening to push them in from the top.
