scope is a Leupold VXR Patrol 3-9x40mm (30mm), which i see has been discontinued. no wonder i got it at a big discount... the rings are Leupold backcountry rings, and the rail is an EGW 20moa rail for the mini howa. i was looking originally for the Leupold FXII 4x33 as it's short and compact and only 9 oz and size looks good in proportion to this micro rifle. with 80MOA of adjustment and very very rugged and to be honest, 4x is plenty for big game out to 250 yards or so. the retailer didn't have any of those (i guess they've been discontinued too) but had this 3x9 on deep discount. i though it is a bit big for the petite rifle, but hey, it is what it is. it has the firedot. not sure, yet, if that's a useful feature or just a gadget to get shoppers to bite. i'm also not sure yet if the TMR reticle is a great thing or another fad. one thing though, this scope has adjustments in mils not moa. so it matches the reticle graduations. that is handy. but for shooting targets i'm not sure if a tmr reticle is a big deal. for hunting... still not sure yet. so for me the jury is still out on the scope, not that it matters. i find on variables i usually use them at one power setting only, so why not just go with a fixed? it's shorter, more reliable, more rugged, and lighter. oh, and the power has to be on max (9x) to get the ranging measurements to come out correctly. so essentially what i've got is a long fixed 9x scope, which makes me chuckle. hope to get out and try some coyote calling soon. perhaps i'll change my mind about fixed vs variable. who knows?
