Lack of predators and a over abundance of food.

Yes and yes. As we kill off more and more of the higher level predators, the lower level predators will increase in number. Take away wolves, bears, and mountain lions and look what has happened with the coyote population, right? Keep pressure on the coyotes and so things like bobcats, skunks, etc. are apt to have more food at their disposal and hence increase in numbers.

Of course, predators and prey tend to go through cycles which can be very localized. This just happens to be a particularly abundant year for skunks on this place. I actually see a lot of skunks on some of my properties, but this is the only one where I am shooting them and that is because the landowner has requested it as they are all around his house. He put a fence around his house to keep out the hogs, but it doesn't keep out the skunks, LOL.
