If the disconnect is not functioning, the hammer will not catch and follow the bolt as it goes into the barrel extension locking lugs. The hammer can strike the firing pin and fire the round before the bolt is fully in battery. Not a healthy outcome for rifle or shooter, not to mention creating trouble with the ATF.
