It is not a prototype. Production models are offered for both military and civilian markets.

So again I'm going to ask. What does a failed rifle cartridge in a never adopted weapon package have to do with being a main stream civilian rifle cartridge.

It's an example of the innovation asked about by the OP. That "failed" cartridge has been the subject of more innovation, experienced more civilian sales, and been adopted by more of the world's military than has 6.5 Grendel.

(And I'm just answering your questions, not trying to start a Grendel vs SPC argument.)
