The flaw in your reasoning is that the assault weapons ban is not legislation proposed by elected politicians.
It is an initiative from private citizens, which bypasses the legislative process, to be voted on by the people.
Sending such a petition to the legislature can not, and will not, prevent the BAWN initiative from proceeding.
