It's not uncommon. I'm guessing there's a hard spot in the steel when it gets formed, and stresses being what they are during the extrusion process, it makes a longitudinal weak "seam" in the case. I've never heard of any real damage or negative effect. I've had two, both neck splits, both longitudinal. Both cases were found later, after looking through the cases for evidence of scratching or other issues. Both were surprises, after the fact, and there is no evidence inside the nitrided chamber of any burning/erosion. I'd guestimate it's not much of an issue, and happens more than folks know.
