MH, keep on, keepin on. It's a process for us all, regardless if we've forgotten how nubbish we all were. Here's my thought: long range, IE- anything beyond 600 yards, isn't going to like your pocket book at all. You're going to be spending equal time and money on finding out what you don't know you don't know.
Here's my advice. Go take some classes. Find an instructor local to you with pedigree, who can take you to the range and put you on targets at that distance or more, and have you hitting them at will in a day. You'll spend 500-1k on a good course/instructor.
Remember, you don't know what you don't know. He/she does, and is worth the money. Because, in the end, you're going to spend double that buying and re-selling stuff you don't really want/need to get where you want to go.
I've been where you are. I've returned to where you are. I've been to 1400 yards at will, too. And I'll tell you, the two classes I took locally (1100 bucks, two weekends) have saved me from myself a few times over.
Stay frisky, fight on.

Nothing kills the incentive of men faster than a healthy sense of entitlement. Nothing kills entitlement faster than a healthy sense of achievement.
