I've shot the Grendel a lot at 600 yards and in my assessment it is a very good caliber for use at this range. For Mid Range I have shot at 300, 500, and 600 yards, at which distance it is a competitive caliber. However for Long range (700, 800, 900, and 1,000 yards) the caliber really starts to ask what can be done to help shore it up. For these ranges I have a .260, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5X68, .264 Win Mag and my real fire breathing Dragon, the 6.5 STW. In my opinion the best caliber at mid to long range is the 6.5 Creedmoor. It is a factory load, uses a proven bullet, powder an primer.
It could be argued that the 6.5x.284 is more capable and I agree it is but not at the expense of greater recoil and reduced barrel life, I would argue the 6.5 Creedmoor is a better compromise and that the 6.5 Grendel is just to anemic.
