I just did my first one, with the Wheeler receiver lapping tool. I was concerned about lateral forces as well, and didn't use a vice at all. I just held the receiver in my hand and lapped clockwise and counter clockwise 20 to 30 seconds at a time with very light pressure. It took just a couple minutes of lapping and checking and it was uniform all the way around.
The lapping is very easy to do before the upper is assembled. Disassembling and reassembling is it's own deal that's not really very hard if you have the tools.
I have a regular crows foot that I ground down the thickness to fit, but there are ones made specially to fit.

And the Aeroshell 33 grease is what I've always heard is the correct assembly lube for an AR, and what I've always used. You can find small quantities for sale on the internet all over.
