A few years ago, Alaska did compile some pretty decent data on bear attacks defense comparing the effectiveness of spray versus firearms. I can't find the article now, but the stat that jumped out at me was that a full 25 (ish)% of the time, the user didn't have time to pull his or her firearm.
When I chambered a round on a black bear that was blundering past me this last week while bow hunting it took off straight away. Win/Win.
We don't have grizzlies around here, so I usually use a .40 in the woods. This week, I was way back and was packing a 9mm with copper solid bullets and +P loading.
