Stupid question. What is "soft setting" a target?

You got it with the 5.56 for that sport. They would have to balance those steels on marbles and hope a butterfly doesn't fly by within a few miles for them to fall over from 5.56.

You have more of a chance with the Grendel, for sure.

25 in class, ended up 5th place with a 35. Learned a few things along the way. my dope was great... dont bring a clean rifle to competition because holy crap that was bad @500m before it settled in.. elevation was all over for the first few sighters (first round was the 500M rams), wear sunblock, bring giant jug of water, buy a sled and single load, whoever devises these matches is in league with the devil, was able to accurately read mirage and set windage appropriately. Not all the targets were "full sized." The last 3 of the turkeys, pigs, and rams were reduced sized targets. Bonus targets were either a 2"x4" plate or a squirrel. How I can manage to nail the squirrel, reduced rams, etc but still managed to actually miss 1 full sized ram completely is beyond my comprehension. I'd blame it on a flier but honestly i dont know what happened. The rest were rams no go down (ass shot preferred after failing to knock down 5 with shoulder shots). I know why I missed the mini pig and 1 turkey... nerves and not used to so much going on around me, definately was not fully in the zone today... clear misses and I was to balme.


I felt a little under-prepared, my dope sheet was laughable at best (still highly effective) but overall more fun than I had in a long time.

The match didnt come down to the rams though... what separated 1-3rd place was the "bonus" targets. snagging the 5th exceeded my expectations, but im still chasing consistency on the rams. I was most impressed by the as issued class as there was a 43 score. Stock iron sights holy wowzers that was amazing to witness.

Spots 1-3 were all wildcat, nothing 5.56 made it past 7th place. #1 spot was rocking a 6mm white oak armament space gun with this amazing neon green paint job.

Shooting conditions changed dramatically over the course of the match. At start, 1-2 mph winds left to right and about 50F. No idea about barometric pressure, mid match it is now 75F and winds picked up to 15-20mph gusts, constant 5-10 same left to right alltitude 550ft

This is what I brought for my turret adjustments. Everyone else had these cool journals with pictures and all kinds of stuff. I was squadded with the match director and he had a good laugh at it, but hey it worked well enough.



In retrospect, a 22" grendel will get the job done and should be capable of perfect score so long as the shooter is good enough and has the experience (not me at all.)
A spicy 123 could probably get the job done as well given how the ram weight is distributed+how the feet are set. A well placed shot can swing it off the perch (2 small rectangular plates about 2" wide welded to railroad track. Targets get set on these perches and it's exploitable. I think my squad partner was giving bad advice with the shoulder shot... previous experience showed me this does dick all and i made the same mistake again...) major lesson learned is to stop chasing those few fpe. It doesn't matter, setup and shot placement are the absolute key. The mythical 1000fpe is all lies, math can go to hell.

I will still go with the 28" when it arrives. 600-1000 yd match next month, I'm officially hooked.
