An AR-15 platform rifle for use as a home defense weapon in an apartment is a bad idea, with regards to over penetration/collateral damage. If you are dead set on it, then you must use frangible ammo for sure! You also may have to have a carbine length gas system since I don't think anyone makes a 16" with a mid-length system. (i could be mistaken)
