I have been a member of the FOP a very long time and many of the FOP are very liberal and are anti 2nd amendment. I have Friend’s who have worked closely with Chuck Canterbury and have supported him in the FOP.
To get to the position of National President of The FOP means Chuck understands politics and saying what is required to get elected. My personal opinion, it is very difficult to get an honest assessment of a politicians true core beliefs. Politicians try to sell themselves as somebody everybody can support.
Chuck Canterbury and the FOP lobbyist primary mission was to pass legislation to support law enforcement officers. Most of these efforts are in workers rights in regards to pay, benefits, plus a workers bill of rights with due process for administrative matters involving law enforcement Officers.
From my experience Chuck is a hard working intelligent man who strives to achieve goals that benefit the FOP membership.
Chuck comes across as one of the guys a whole lot more than somebody like Robert Muehler or James Comey who have both spoken at the National FOP convention.
The FOP is a union first and a Fraternal organization second. The FOP is very political in it’s core structure so I understand the nature of FOP politics as I was involved in my Agencies FOP union as a trustee. I attended many State and a few national FOP conferences.
Chuck Canterbury is a problem solver type of person who wasn’t breaking both arms to pat himself on the back. Chuck knows how to follow orders and I would rather have Chuck over so many other two faced political types. Chuck has worked as a Street Cop and appears to have good common sense. I don’t see Chuck as the vindictive type of person.
The most recent FOP President’s have tried to work both sides of the isle to the benefit of the FOP membership. In the past the FOP top leadership cozied up to the Democratic party and came across just like many other large unions like Teamsters, AFLCIO, UMW and the like. Under Chuck’s leadership the FOP has moved far away from being a typical union that automatically supports Democrats.
As someone else mentioned it will be interesting to see how the Democratic Senators vote in regards to Canterbury appointment. I suspect Chuck will get Senate approval but I wouldn't be surprised if fifteen Democrat Senators voted against him.
