I stopped by PCP's booth and they had their 6.8 cartridge entrant to the NGSW.
It looks like a polymer cased .270 WSM with the bullet buried in pretty deep, with only the ogive protruding from the neck.
It had a rebated case head, at least .500" in diameter, with a larger case body diameter.
Those cartridge dimensions are a non-starter for a squad weapon out of the gate from a purely volumetric standpoint, for reasons that should be obvious.
Imagine what a magazine or linked belt would look like with those case dims.
We know from painful experience that 7.62 NATO is already a non-starter for a squad weapon, so an even larger case just doesn't make any sense for combat endurance.
Also, .270 WSM from a 24" barrel pushing a 130gr maxes out at 3200fps shooting solids.
They're talking about 3400-3500fps from a 16" barrel.
PCP said they met all of the required specs in performance from the Army, throat life not being something that was called out.
