The point of breaking in a barrel is to essentially polish out any machining marks left in the throat/bore. The old shoot/clean/shoot/clean/etc practice is aimed at making sure that the inconsistencies get fire lapped away rather than just filled in with copper.
A break in procedure isnt going to make or break a barrel. It can potentially help by smoothing out the throat. If you bought a high-end hand-lapped barrel I wouldnt worry about it. If you bought something else you may benefit from it or may not. The break-in cadence you use is less important than being aware of what the goal is: remove copper and fire-lap machining marks. Its not going to turn a 1.5 barrel into a 0.5 barrel, but it may turn it into a 1.0-1.2 barrel.
