The claim that the AK's open receiver design contributes to its reliability by allowing debris to exist while the operating parts move around my be true for the op rod, but is a killer for the trigger mechanism. While there is a lot of room inside the gas tube for debris to exist and still allow normal movement of the op rod, you're asking for things to go wrong when a coil trigger/hammer/disconnector spring accumulates particulate matter as large as sand grains. Something will likely go wrong.
