I have to say that's a dangerous way of determining a safe load in a pressure vessel. I recommend sticking with internal ballistics programs, loading manuals and online powder charts (better still, a combination of all three). Clearance around firing pins and different primer thickness/hardness will give you false comfort until something gives. Even at one grain less than what you think is too much you might still be hammering your gun to pieces.
