Gotta go with Biod on this one. You are probably over thinking the entire process (which is exactly the way I do it so I am not saying it is bad. Just consuming).
I've seen people hit steel all day at 500 yards with $200 scopes. There is always a difference between what you can get away with and what would be considered good practices. The more time you spend looking into a scope the more you will appreciate good glass. I was out at the range with a friend a few weeks ago who never shot anything past 200 yards. After a couple hours he aced 500-600 yards with his Grendel. He also brought his 14.5" 5.56 with 62 gr mil spec ammo and a $150 on sale scope. Once he got the range he could easily nail steel out to 400 yards. Mind you, this is light years away from dialing in the range/conditions and making first round hits but it is a ton of fun and it still is hitting.
