We may need to look and the meaning of bear in the context of the 2A and the customary definition as used in the late 18th century.
Much like the word gay, the word bear may well have a different meaning today than when the 3 Musketeers was written. I suspect that the evolution of the meaning of bear has not gone though as complete a transformation, however.
