I adapted the studies by Chris Long, the long family, on OBT methods and his empirical formula for barrel nodes.
Put it into an Excel format. My approach is that, for a shooter whose barrel length is obviously fixed, the variables available for timing the bullet exit are MV (through bullet, powder and load grains selection) and COAL. A shooter doesn't really care what the node's particular number is for his barrel (ie, #3, #4, #6, etc), only that the bullet is exiting on or near the node.
I use this approach mainly because it relies on strictly objective data, the physical properties of steel, and the physics of accelerating an object to a terminal velocity. My personal shooting abilities are not perfect enough for me to judge nodes via shot placement on paper, there are too many variables (probably in the 0.001's of an inch even) in shooting technique and little pushes/pulls/flinches/cheek welds, etc during the shot. A true competitive or marksman shooter can probably do that, but I haven't been able to do so. Hence, the search for objective data instead.
