The funny thing is that all US commerce is supposed to be conducted in the metric system except gold which is in Troy ounces. This has been true since the 1790's but we hold on to what we are familiar with and most people don't even know that we made the conversion back then, they think it is some time in the distant future we will change.
You can ignore the 1.047" while using MOA and just use 1"@100 yards, 2"@200 and so on for practical application of the MOA system. Since I know all the target faces, wind values, and wild game dimensions in MOA it is what I am comfortable with. Also our US service rifles are calibrated in MOA with 1, or 1/2, or 1/4 MOA sight clicks. So if you are a high power competitor, and switch back and forth between service rifle, match rifle and any/any rifle the only way to stay consistent is MOA. And believe me, you don't want to be trying to keep up with switching winds and two systems in your head, you will get the wrong one under stress.
