There are a few key factors you have left out of your scenario. The majority of military personnel,"at this time" are pro Constitution and pro gun rights. Dropping 1000lb Jdams on foreign entities, "who love to behead helpless victims" is a far different scenario than dropping it on the neighbors house who refuses to follow illegal confiscation laws.

Perception is everything, "if the gun owners are seen as victims of a corrupt anti-Constitutional government or as a bunch of illiterate whacked out red necks being held accountable by a responsible government securing the nation" will make all the difference.
