USAF Air Crew Survival Carbine

After spending a fair bit of time as a Forward Air Controller in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam era and seeing how quickly downed pilots were picked up, captured, or killed, I wondered what the purpose of a survival rifle really was.

Later, as I became more familiar with nuclear weapons, their effects and the MAD Doctrine, I understood the purpose better. There would be no airfields to return to, and effectively everyone - military and civilian - would have to get by as hunter-gatherers for at least a year.

In this environment, a 22 Hornet or 5.56 would be a very effective meat gatherer.

Clearly, they're now more concerned with fighting off enemy infantry, than living off the land.
