From my perspective either are fine rounds for your stated purpose. I went round and round with this as well and ended up building a Grendel pistol, but I have personally found that less is more. I only get to the range about 1-2 times a month. When I go, I normally try to train with my CCW since its normally on me and most likely to be used for social work. When I train with long guns, I end up always using my 16” Grendel. I have set that rifle up like a recce or general purpose rifle with a LVPO, WML, and sling. I use it for hunting and for all intents and purposes serves as my SHTF/WROL/home defense rifle. The Grendel pistol never gets shot, I never train with it, and thus I feel more comfortable using my 16” rifle if I ever needed to for home defense.
The other revelation that I had is that my CCW is either on me or bedside. So in reality, any home defense situation I find myself in will likely be fought with that rather than my long gun. I guess my point is I would evaluate the tools that you have and determine if any of those could fill the role you see a gap in. if so, then concentrate on training, ammo, and support equipment that give you an edge.
Then again, i know how it is, sometimes you just need something new and you have to justify it with a purpose. If that is the case, I would choose to stick with the same mags and ammo that I have on hand. If you have Grendel already, build a Grendel. If you have a 300blk already and a Grendel, then build either one.
