By all means ...... check the buffer and make sure the gas port is lined up correctly. It's good to know your own weapon. But, when (or if) you find that everything seems fine, just put some oil on it and see if that helps.
Simply cycling the action by hand can help. Holding the clip on the charging handle open so it doesn't keep catching the upper reciever and locking (and tearing up the notch), pull the charging handle 150-200 times (which only takes about 10 min) will usually wear in the parts enough to smooth them out and let them slide easier. It mimics shooting the rifle 200 times ..... without using up ammo.
Since the OP admits that he didn't oil it much ..... I'm guessing that's the issue. I'll wait till the OP goes back to the range and proves me wrong .... before getting into with anyone about what's wrong with it.
