I always thought the Stg 44 (SturmGewehr 44) was the first assault rifle and so-named, sturm means to storm or assault, rifle, "storm" as in, storm the battlements.
That was in '43 or '44. It was more than just a machinen pistole so not just a submachine gun, and specifically designed to carry by mechanized troops in a combat vehicle, kind of a replacement for the 98 carbine.
