I'm a former 458 Socom owner, and have some regrets for letting it go. If I go with a big bore AR again, it would still be the 458 Socom.
Part of my reasoning for choosing the 458 was because of the bullet options for reloading, and my own experience and familiarity with the .45/70 cartridge in a lever gun. The Socom uses the same bullets at similar velocities.
One very useful resource for bullet performance is http://www.marlinowners.com/forum/45-70-govt/ . Obviously, the forum on that link is geared towards the .45/70 in lever guns, but many participants there really know there stuff regarding bullet performance. Though reloading data for the two cartridges isn't the same, launching the same bullet at the same velocity will provide similar results.
The .45/70 has been around a long time, which means there is a considerable amount of information available regarding terminal effects of various bullets in hunting applications. This can be of great value to a hunter that loads for the 458 Socom.
