Nitride does not add thickness to the steel, Nitride nitro carbonization goes into the steel a few microns. The Kies barrels were sold around 2012 before there was as many Nitride/Melonite/QPQ barrels on the market. One of the first rifles to use many Nitride parts was the MagPul Masada/ACR, just as a reference to when Nitride started being used in firearms.
