For those who don't know, Alexander was charging companies to use the name 'Grendel'. Over the years, companies have come and gone in terms of paying to use that name. To name a few, LW and Les Bear, barrel makers Shilen and Satern.

My question would be this. Since the Grendel is getting the SAMMI stamp, does this mean that AA no longer has proprietary hold over the name 'Grendel'?

Actually, AA never charged anyone to use the Grendel name or trademark. The only requirement was that they ONLY use the designated Grendel chamber and that they maintain appropriate quality control of that chambering. Shilen still makes Grendel barrels, though to this point exclusively for AA. Les Baer, Lothar Walthar, and Satern all had other issues regarding the use of the Grendel chamber and/or name, but it wasn't related to the payment or royalties.

With SAAMI approval, the use of the Grendel trademark passes into common domain, and may be used by anyone chambering the rifle or making ammunition within the SAAMI specifications. As posted on the AA website:



The Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute ("SAAMI") has adopted the 6.5 Grendel as an official SAAMI cartridge. As a result of the cartridge's official recognition, ALEXANDER ARMS® will relinquish the trademark "6.5 Grendel."

Bill Alexander states: "One of the primary purposes of trademarking the name was to protect the integrity of the design. With the adoption of the 6.5 Grendel cartridge standard by SAAMI, the design is now protected and any confusion in the marketplace as to the specification of the cartridge has been eliminated."

SAAMI's formal adoption of the design specifications for the cartridge has led ALEXANDER ARMS® to announce that it will relinquish its federally-registered trademark and that "6.5 Grendel" is to be the common commercial name for a cartridge that adheres to the specifications adopted by SAAMI.
