Maybe OP's description is a little misleading. Only way for us to really know is to visit the range in question. How about it, OP?
I guess I didn't mention that the house is an underground bunker looking place and the only thing visible is the top of the carport. It is also 700 feet higher than the 7' berm. there is a field 150 yards wide behind the berm that gently slopes upward to being 30' higher than the top of the berm. Then as the hill rises there is another 200 yards of thick timber. My neighbor shoots on this range regularly and will be out there Sunday for the yearly egg shoot. I don't think you could actually hit his house but if you tried you could hit the carport roof. On the other side of the hill there are several houses and big fields that if you mortared some rounds up there with handgun rounds you could hit something maybe. If Wes had his weapon pointed at the berm while he played with his safety there would have been no issue. I have seen AD's happen inside police stations and gun ranges many times. I have seen AD's that were caused by airheads that were checking to see if the safety was on by pulling the trigger. Probably the most common AD is caused by jacking a round out of a semi auto, then removing the magazine and pulling the trigger. Beyond this I am now completely against binary triggers, prefer three shot burst triggers if I have to have the capability. Which I don't.
